Dr. Kevin Wakeman, PhD (PI)
I started out in marine biology by incidentally taking a SCUBA diving course (ca. 2006) as an undergrad. Fifteen years on, I am still diving. I now work at Hokkaido University in their Integrated Science Program as an Assistant Professor.
Education: PhD, Zoology University of British Columbia (2013); BSc, Biology Humboldt State University (2009); BA, German, Humboldt State University (2009)
Current Position: Assistant Professor, Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education, Hokkaido University, Japan

Current Lab Members
Eric Odle

Position: PhD Student (DX Fellow)
Research Project: marine apicomplexans
About Eric: Eric is a PhD student that started in the lab in 2022. He is working on marine apicomplexans, with the goal of better understanding speciation as it relates to host specificity and biogeography.
Education: MSc Biology, National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan
Shaun Cunningham

Position: PhD Student (MEXT Scholarship)
Research Project: marine benthic dinoflagellates
About Shaun: Prior to starting his PhD, Shaun was working as a marine scientist in New Zealand. Currently, Shaun is working on benthic dinoflagellates for his PhD project. He will be combining biodiversity and ecology to better understand bloom dynamics of harmful algal blooms in Japan.
Education: MSc Biology, University of Otago, New Zealand
Siratee Riewluang (Everyone calls him ‘P’)

Position: Masters student
Research Project: Microalgal symbionts of marine acoels
About P: P was an ISP undergraduate student in the Wakeman Lab. He worked on the biodiversity of microalgae (Tetraselmis and Symbiodiniaceae) that associate with marine acoels. He is currently a master’s student in the lab and is continuing this work.
Education: BS Biology, Hokkaido University, Japan
Talia Arana

Position: Undergraduate Thesis
Research Project: Biodiversity and biotechnological applications of Labyrinthula in Japanese mangroves
About Talia: Talia is an ISP undergraduate student in the Wakeman Lab. For her undergraduate thesis, she will be working isolating and cultivating a diversity of Labyrinthula from Mangroves in Okinawa (southern Japan). She will also examine biotechnological applications including novel methods of cultivation using nanoparticles to enhance fatty acid biosynthesis.
Education: BS Biology, Hokkaido University, Japan
