Dr. Kevin Wakeman, PhD (PI)
I started out in marine biology by incidentally taking a SCUBA diving course (ca. 2006) as an undergrad. Fifteen years on, I am still diving. I now work at Hokkaido University in their Integrated Science Program as an Assistant Professor.
Education: PhD, Zoology University of British Columbia (2013); BSc and BA Humboldt State University Biology and German (2009)
Current Position: Assistant Professor, Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education, Hokkaido University, Japan

Dr. Jonathan Banks

Position: Visiting Assistant Professor
Research Project: Diversity of apicomplexans in shellfish (bivalves) in Japan
About Jonathan: Jonathan works as a Senior Scientist at Cawthron Institute in New Zealand where he specializes in various aspects of molecular biology as they related to fisheries biology, environmental monitoring, and public health. In November 2021 he will visit our lab and work as a visiting Assistant Professor at Hokkaido University until March 2022.

Yong Heng Phua

Position: Undergraduate Student
Research Project: Toxic dinoflagellates in the South Pacific Ocean
About Phua: Phua started in the lab as an ambitious 2nd year undergraduate. He has been working in the lab for the last 2 years, and amassed a considerable amount of data with some exciting results. Phua will start his final fourth-year project in April 2021.

Kay Hian Lim

Position: Undergraduate Student
Research Project: Diversity of the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis in Japan
About Kay Hian: Kay Hian is completing his 4th-year project in the laboratory and aims to examine a genus of toxic dinoflagellate, Ostreopsis. His project will be looking at some biodiversity, as well as looking at some of the molecular pathways associated with toxin production.
